Procedure for Request and Approval of Hazlewood Exemption for Texas Veterans or their Dependents

Please READ, this page in its entirety BEFORE you call or email.

Senate Bill 101, passed by the 79th Legislature, calls for the Coordinating Board to develop a central database for tracking students’ 150 hours of eligibility through the Hazlewood Exemption (TEC 54.203), and gives the Board rule-making authority. The most important changes that will go into effect for spring 2006 are:

  • All veterans or dependents of deceased veterans who receive the exemption for spring 2006 must complete the HE-SP06P Hazlewood Application.
  • If the veteran or dependent has never before used Hazlewood, his/her letter regarding federal education benefits must be issued by the VA Education Center in Muskogee, Oklahoma, whose phone number is 1-888-GI-Bill-1 or 1-888-442-4551 and web site is www.gibill.va.gov.

The database is under construction at the Board, and plans are for Texas A&M University and students to be able to use the database to check on hour balances by mid April.

Revisions from the 79th Legislature related to the Hazlewood Act, Texas Education Code § 54.203. VETERANS, DEPENDENTS, ETC.
